This is a reminder to contact us if interested in summer school. Parents/Guardians that are interested in this online summer school opportunity for their student should contact Queensmount’s Guidance Contact (kal_deep@wrdsb.ca). Summer school details are below.
The Waterloo Region District School Board plans to offer Grade 6, 7 & 8 students an opportunity to enroll in online summer school programs. Grade 6 & 7 students may register in the High School Preparatory Program. Grade 8 students may register for either the High School Preparatory Program, or the Reach Ahead program, based on their learning needs.
- All programs begin Monday July 4 and end on Thursday July 28
- All programs are online and will be delivered using both asynchronous and synchronous learning environments
- Students requiring extra support (SERT Support) will have the opportunity to attend in-person
- Only WRDSB students currently registered in 2021/2022 are eligible
- Registration opens March 23rd, 2022 @ noon and will close @4:00 pm May 19th, 2022.
HIGH SCHOOL PREPARATORY PROGRAM
For students in Grade 6, 7 or 8. This program, through both a synchronous and asynchronous learning model, will reinforce key concepts that are the foundations to success in Grades 7, 8 and 9. Students will choose to focus on either numeracy or literacy for the four week summer program. Through authentic, inquiry-based learning, students will deepen their knowledge and understanding while consolidating concepts in their chosen area of focus.
Who is the High School Preparatory Program for?
If you are entering into Grade 7, 8 or 9 in September and:
- achieved a level one or two on your most recent report card, and;
- would benefit from focused instruction in either numeracy or literacy
Students will be expected to participate in online learning activities/lessons 5 days per week.
Hours for the High School Prep Program:
- 10am-2pm -both synchronous and asynchronous blocks of work
- 2pm-3pm -optional drop in and tutorials
REACH AHEAD HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM [ONLINE] (GLS – General Learning Strategies)
This credit course explores learning strategies and helps students become more independent learners while increasing their personal management skills, both in school and in other contexts. By completing the Reach Ahead program, students will start Grade 9 feeling confident to succeed in high school and having already earned a credit (GLS 10).
Highlights of the curriculum expectations include:
- develop learning strategies and skills to support your transition into high school
- identify and use a variety of literacy skills and strategies to improve reading, writing, and oral communication in everyday contexts;
- identify and use a variety of numeracy skills and strategies to improve their practical application of mathematics in everyday contexts;
- apply knowledge of their personal skills and learning strengths to develop strategies for success in secondary school;
- identify and describe personal-management skills required for success, and explain their use to help maximize learning;
- identify and describe the knowledge and skills necessary for successful interpersonal relations and teamwork;
- apply their knowledge of school, work, and community involvement opportunities to develop a personal learning plan;
Students are expected to participate daily for the duration of the program.
Students will be required to complete online module work through the VLE. This course will be delivered using both asynchronous and synchronous learning environments.
Hours for the Reach Ahead Program:
- 8:30am-3pm (following the secondary schedule as this is a credit bearing course)
- daily attendance and participation are required
